Developing Leadership Capacity

Alberta’s Leadership Quality Standard outlines that "A leader provides opportunities for members of the school community to develop leadership capacity and to support others in fulfilling their educational roles."

I Continue to Develop by:

  • Co-training staff in the 7Habits
  • Introduced and lead my staff through using a new portfolio software Schoology.
  • Provide leadership opportunities for students for example: the mascot at assemblies, reading announcements on the morning announcements, being greeters and tour guides for our school.
  • Model and use a gradual release of responsibility with staff to try new learning
  • Encourage others to be leaders by providing opportunities for other in-house presenting or co-presenting
  • Mentor teacher and to build capacity in presentation and leadership skills. Some of the topics included were: Daily 4 Math, Digital Citizenship, How We Use Chromebooks in School, Technology Integration, Audience = Engagement, Our Daily 5 School Journey
  •  Provide School Council sessions
  • Present and write a program for the district Building Readers

Reflection:
Taking the time to model and work with other staff on areas of their passion or expertise allows me to leverage them as leaders in our school as well as builds their confidence in the teaching and roll in the school. Having a variety of leaders in the school to help support moving new initiatives forward is beneficial. Sometime tough moves need a team of like minded people to be excited and share their excitement. I will call this the ripple. Having a slow ripple flow through the school with people who are excited creates a positive vibe and trust. Having others see their trusted colleagues excited about a change or a challenge and leading the way provides doorways to be opened and helps to ease one and other into new situations.

When starting the Daily 5 ripple in our school. It just takes a couple of people talking about the progress and results with excitement to have more staff start listening and wanting to find out more. As the ripple and excitement grow so does the team moving forward.
