Understanding and Responding to the Larger Societal Context

Alberta’s Leadership Quality Standard outlines that "A leader understands and appropriately responds to the political, social, economic, legal and cultural contexts impacting schools and school authority."

Here are examples of how I continue to met this criteria:

  • Working with community partners, such as FCSS and Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Blackfalds Food Bank
  • Participate in PD opportunities such as the "Brain Game" & the Blanket Activity  to build knowledge of FMNI
  • Keeping our Website and Social Media pages up to current and appealing, so that families can find current and relevant information and opportunities happening locally for their children.
  • Adhering  to all legal structures in place: FOIP, field trip legal guidelines, Wolf Creek Administrative Policies, ATA
  • Doing whatever it takes for families in need; for example generating funds through Santa’s anonymous, the Mitten Tree, Food for Schools program, Coats for Kids etc.
  • Applying and receiving grant money from various sources to bring in presenters for students and families, to buy 21st century tools to teach students to preserve, to communicate in new ways and to build their skills in collaborative learning.
  • Helping manage and fund raise for community and global fundraisers, Big Brothers and Sisters - Wii Bowling, Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research, Santa's Anonymous
  • Attending some of the LGBTQ cohort meetings and working with our LGBTQ rep to provide resources and support to our staff and students
  • Encouraging the Librarian to purchase socially diverse books and recommending any books that I come across.
  • Taking advantage of any learning opportunities that I come across or are shared with me to help me build my foundational knowledge in a variety of social contexts.

Thank you to the Blackfalds Ag Society for providing some of the funds for our tower gardens. The students enjoy them every day. It is always a great day when you can stand around the garden tower and talk with students while snacking on lettuce and tomatoes.

LPI Reflection:

In a school it is essential for me to understand where my students come from and what affects their life each day. As a school, it is important to work with community agencies and the community as a whole to provide the best resources for each family. I grew up in the community of Blackfalds and still take great pride in being involved with community activities and the people that make up this great town. This town has grown rapidly over the last 15 years and it is great to work with the community to make the best options for education and services available for our student. It really does take a village to raise a child.
