Embodying Visionary Leadership

Alberta’s Leadership Quality Standard outlines that "A leader collaborates with the school community to create and implement a shared vision for student success, engagement, learning and well-being."

Vision Planning

I feel that I am working on meeting this criteria by being part of the following: The vision in our school started after the staff had the opportunity to read the book The Leader in Me by Covey. This book prompted a whole group discussion about how there is a leader in all of us and what we as a school community can do to foster that leadership.  We focused that discussion around the question "If you had a child in this school what would you want the school vision to be? After, brainstorming ideas this information was taken to a a smaller group to work on specific language. Following, it was brought back to the staff as a draft and any further suggestions. At this point, our vision was then taken to the parent council for feedback from them.  It was very important to have the entire school community (including parents and community members) on board with our vision. We wanted it to come to life within our building and extend into our educational community. We keep our vision at the front and center of our school (painted on the wall), we use it as the lens we make our decisions around and as the lens to use when deciding on budgetary items. At IREC we review our vision and mission at the beginning of the school year and at any large or small meeting that we need to clarify our lens. As a member of the diamond team, we revisit our mission to guide our practice and our decisions. IREC Vision statement.

 School Ace Planning

  • The school ACE plan is first looked at by the admin team. They work together to add any historical data and new goals that we are working on as a school. It is then shared with the diamond team and we each have different pieces of evidence that we can share to help round out the information to represent our school. After this, the plan will be shared with division office, our staff and our parent community. We were very fortunate this year to be able to take two members of our district office staff around our school and show them living evidence of our ACE plan. A picture is worth a thousand words and seeing our school live our goals is more than any picture or words could say. During this process, I was able to add feedback and evidence as a Diamond Team member. I was also, able to sit in on the conversation with District Office staff to help them understand our culture and learning opportunities.

Xtreme Assemblies

Each month we host an Xtreme assembly where the students MC, one or more classes do a performance of a poem, song, musical piece, play, etc. We also recognize the Snack Attack class of the month, an Optimist Award recipient and one class earns the opportunity to take part in the Main Event. An activity with the Mascot of the school.

School Council

Our School Council meets once a month on the first Tuesday. Each month we share upcoming events, have a training, sharing of new learnings at school  or have a parent development piece. We also have the School Board representative and a town of Blackfalds representative who attend our meeting to provide upcoming information from both of their perspective organizations.
